Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Black Hills, Pennington County, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore National Monument is located near Keystone in the Black Hills in Pennington County, South Dakota.

 

Vi fortsatte over Rapid City til Mount Rushmore, hvor vi besøgte de fire gamle drenge....

Mount Rushmore National Memorial er lavet af billedhugger John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, bedre kendt som Gutzon Borglum. Han var søn af Jens Møller Haugaard Børglum og hustru Ida Michelsen, som kom til USA fra Danmark omkring 1864.
Opfordret af South Dakota historiker Doane Robinson, begyndte Gutzon Borglum på Mount Rushmore skulpturen i 1927. Med 400 medhjælpere fortsatte arbejdet indtil Borglums død i 1941. Værket var på det tidspunkt næsten færdigt, og Borglums søn James Lincoln Borglum overså udførelsen af de sidste detaljer.

Mount Rushmore National Memorial was created by sculptor John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum, better known as Gutzon Borglum. He was the son of Jens Møller Haugaard Børglum and wife Ida Michelsen, who came to the U. S. from Denmark around 1864.
Encouraged by South Dakota historian Doane Robinson, Gutzon Borglum started work on the Mount Rushmore sculpture in 1927. With 400 helpers the work continued until Borglum's death in 1941. At this time the work was nearly finished, and Borglum's son James Lincoln Borglum oversaw the completion of the project.

Mount Rushmore har ikke altid heddet Mount Rushmore. Lakota indianerne kaldte bjerget "Six Grandfathers" og hvide pionerer har undertiden kaldt det "Cougar Mountain", "Keystone Cliffs", "Slaughterhouse Mountain" eller "Sugarloaf Mountain". Bjerget blev døbt "Mount Rushmore" i 1885 af Charles Rushmore, da han var taget derop på ekspedition sammen med David Swanzey og Bill Challis.

David Swanzey giftede sig senere med Caroline Celestia "Carrie" Ingalls, Laura's lillesøster.

Mount Rushmore was not always called Mount Rushmore. The Lakota Indians called the mountain "Six Grandfathers" and early white pioneers variously called it "Cougar Mountain", "Keystone Cliffs", "Slaughterhouse Mountain" or "Sugarloaf Mountain". The mountain was named "Mount Rushmore" in 1885 by Charles Rushmore, when he went up there on an expedition with David Swanzey and Bill Challis.

David Swanzey later married Caroline Celestia "Carrie" Ingalls, Laura's younger sister.

Hvert præsidenthoved er 18 meter højt. Næserne er 6 meter lange, undtagen Washingtons som er 6,4 meter lang. Hver mund er 5,5 meter bred, og hvert øje er 3,35 meter bredt.

Each president's head is 60 foot tall. The noses are 20 feet long, except for Washington's which is 21 feet long. Each mouth is 18 feet wide, and each eye 11 feet across.
