Backyard of the Day:

Wall Drug Store, Wall, Pennington County, South Dakota

Wall Drug Store is located on the corner of Fifth and Main in Wall, Pennington County, South Dakota.

By midafternoon we were going west again, and it wasn't long, before we started seeing billboards for Wall Drug, where we ended up just before sundown.
Bill and Dorothy Hustead bought the tiny little drug store in Wall in 1931, but after five years business wasn't good, and Bill and Dorothy were considering selling. There were just no customers. Wall was a tiny town of honest, but poor, people, and the many cars that drove by on the highway saw no reason to stop and visit the drug store in Wall. Until 1936 when Dorothy had the idea of putting up billboards along the highway, advertising...

Free Ice Water.

The signs had barely been put up, before people were standing in line for their free water. Most people bought a little something, since they were there anyway, and before a year had gone by, Bill and Dorothy had to hire eight girls to help them out. And that was just the beginning...

Today Wall Drug covers an entire block. There is room for over 500 people in the café (not bad in a town with just over 800 residents). Aside from the drug store there are things like a playground and other amusements, two museums, an art collection, a travelers' chapel, and many souvenir shops. And now, on a busy day, they have twenty thousand customers.

I must say that although Wall Drug is an experience, it isn't really my cup of tea. There are just too many people - and today wasn't even a busy day! Himself enjoys the whole carnival considerably more than I do, and The Spud... well, of course she was just absolutely crazy about it! And inspiring, well, THAT it sure is!

These days you help yourself to your free water.

The newest attraction... a Tyrannosaurus Rex that roars at people every twelve minutes.
