Den første kirke i
Tumacácori blev grundlagt af jesuitpræsten Eusebio
Francisco Kino sidst i 1600-tallet. I dag står kun fundamentet
omkring 1800. Arbejdet blev afbrudt af Mexicos
uafhængighedskrig, og af mangel på kapital. På et
tidspunkt besluttede munkene at sælge 4000 stykker kvæg
The first church in
Tumacácori was established by the Jesuit priest Eusebio
Francisco Kino in the late 1600s. Today only the foundation of that
first building remains.
In the mid-1700s the King of
Spain banished the Jesuits for political reasons, and the Franciscans
took over the little mission. They decided to build a larger church,
and began work on the present building about 1800. The work was
interrupted by the Mexican war for independence, and by lack of
funding. At one point the monks decided to sell 4000 head of cattle
to a local rancher in order to finance the completion of the mission,
but when the rancher was slow to pay up, the building activity was
halted again.
They began to use the unfinished
mission in 1822, and when Tumacácori was abandoned about 1848
after several Indian raids and a very harsh winter, construction on
the church had still not been completed. |
