This morning we visited the De Grazia Gallery in Tucson. I've loved Ted De Grazia's art since I can remember, but never really "knew" the artist behind the art. It was truly an experience way beyond my expectations.

"Undren" ~ "Wondering"

Ettore "Ted" De Grazia was born in Arizona on June 14, 1909, and lived here his entire life, aside from five childhood years spent in his parents' native Italy.
Ted De Grazia's images are overwhelmingly influenced by Catholicism, and by Mexican and Papago Indian culture.
He fought for many years to be recognized for his art, until in 1960 he became famous when one of his pictures was used as UNICEF's Christmas card. In 1976 he hauled a hundred of his paintings up into the mountains near Phoenix and set them on fire to protest the inheritance tax that would be imposed for his artwork at his death.
Ted De Grazia died September 17, 1982, and is buried behind the little church he himself built nearby.

"Østenvind" ~ "Wind from the East"

"Nazaræer i rød tunika" ~ "Nazarene in Red Tunic"

The garden is a gallery unto itself, meandering desert paths with artistic surprises around each bend.

"Livet" ~ "Life"

Half a trombone and a blue star can be a kind of art too.

Vor Frue af Guadalupe ~ Our Lady of Guadalupe

Ted De Grazia was the architect of his own house. The gallery was built from adobe and the entry resembles a mine entrance. A part of the floor is inlaid with slices of saguaro skeletons and is gorgeous.

"De Stille" ~ "The Quiet Ones"

Atelieret ~ The studio

Ted De Grazia built his own little chapel for the Indians to use and to honor Our Lady of Guadalupe, "the brown virgin".
