Dagens baghave:

Backyard of the Day:

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Lancaster, Los Angeles County, California

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve is located at 15101 Lancaster Road, west of Lancaster in Los Angeles County, California

Because apparently we just can't get enough of the wild flowers all of a sudden, today we went up to visit the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve.

The California Poppy (Eschscholtzia californica) was made the official state flower in 1903, at which time large parts of the state were still covered in them. In the 1700s Spanish explorers described the large golden blooming areas as "rivers of gold" flowing clear into the Pacific.
Today the poppy, which is protected, is still found in many places in California, but Antelope Valley in the Mojave Desert is the only place where they continue to grow in large fields.

In some places the poppy is having to compete with several kinds of grasses this year.

Poppy and goldfields (lasthenia californica), which are a kind of tiny sunflowers.
