Backyard of the Day:

Chicano Park, Barrio Logan, San Diego, California

Chicano Park is located under the Coronado bridge on-ramps
in Barrio Logan, San Diego, California

We daycamped at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan today. Chicano Park is an area that was taken over by community activists in 1970. The local population wanted to make the area into a park, rather than building a highway patrol station there as planned by the city. The activists, largely Mexican immigrants, won, and the park became a symbol of workers' victory over government. The park has also become a center for movements supporting Mexico reclaiming the American Southwest.

In reaction to the marring of their neighborhood by the many ugly pillars under the Coronado Bay Bridge, local artists began to paint the grey concrete surfaces. More and more people found that the park was the perfect place for them to express themselves in this way, and it now holds the world's largest collection of outdoor murals.

Since the 1990s conflict has arisen once again around Chicano Park, this time because the Coronado Bay Bridge is scheduled for retrofitting. This has threatened to harm the murals, and CalTrans has suspended the original plans and is now seeking alternative options, hoping to retrofit the bridge with minimal effect on the murals.
