Chicano Park is an area that was taken over by community activists in 1970. The local population wanted to make the area into a park, rather than building a highway patrol station there as planned by the city. The activists, largely Mexican immigrants, won, and the park became a symbol of workers' victory over government. The park has also become a center for movements supporting Mexico reclaiming the American Southwest.
