Vi krydsede tilbage over
We crossed back over the
Mississippi River, this time into Iowa, which, with its many farms
dotting the landscape, looks a lot like Minnesota - and Denmark. |

Steadman drive hotellet. |
We drove north to Burr Oak,
where the Ingalls family lived and worked around the year 1877. The
Ingalls family had become good friends with William Steadman, with
whom they attended church in Walnut Grove, and when Steadman bought
Masters' Hotel in Burr Oak, Iowa, he convinced Charles, whose harvest
had just failed for the second year, to move his family to Iowa to
help Steadman manage the hotel. |

Laura Ingalls Wilder skrev
år for familien.
Laura Ingalls Wilder never
included the family's time in Burr Oak in her books. It was on the
journey to Burr Oak that Laura's 9-month old brother Freddie died,
and it was an extremely difficult year for the family. Pa did not
like living in a bustling town like Burr Oak, and he and Caroline did
not feel the hotel was a suitable place for bringing up his girls, so
after just over a year the family returned to Walnut Grove, this time
with another baby, little Grace, who had been born in Burr Oak. |
