Scotty's Castle, Death Valley,
Inyo County, California

Scotty's Castle is located in the northern end of
Death Valley in Inyo County, California

Scotty's Castle was built in 1927 by Walter "Death Valley Scotty" Scott and his good friend, Chicago millionaire Albert Johnson.
Scotty met Johnson, when he sought - and found - millionaire investors for his more or less ficticious gold mine in Death Valley. When there was no return on his investments, Johnson traveled to Death Valley to check Scotty out personally, and he discovered to his surprise that the climate in Death Valley was exactly what he needed to improve his failing health.
Johnson and Scotty became great friends, and Scotty lived largely off the generousity of his friend the rest of his life.
The house was the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, but Scotty, who came and went as he pleased and often bragged that the house was his, lived in a small house near by.

In a valley next to the castle lie piles of old railroad ties from the former Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad. The timber was intended for use as fuel in the castle's fourteen fireplaces, and was already then estimated to be sufficient to last into the 21. century.
