The town was established after Frank "Shorty" Harris and Ernest "Ed" Cross found gold in one of the surrounding hills. Rhyolite was abandoned around 1911, partly due to lack of investing, but also because there is no water in the area, and it was expensive to have it brought in. Many of the town's residents moved to nearby Beatty.
