Today Mission San Fernando Rey de España looks largely as it did originally, but before the mission was restored in the 1920s it was in ruins. Since 1847 the mission had served as a warehouse, a horse stable, and a pig farm, the floors had been broken up by gold prospectors, and general delapidation was rampant.
