Sunset Crater National Monument, Flagstaff, Coconino County, Arizona

Sunset Crater National Monument is located north of Flagstaff along Highway 89 in Coconino County, Arizona.

We rolled north toward Grand Canyon, but first went a bit off course by Sunset Crater, a volcano that was formed about 800 years ago when ashes and lava began to pour out of a crack in the earth's surface. Sunset Crater is entirely lava and ashes.

Sunset Crater er omgivet af lavamarker.

Sunset Crater is surrounded by lava fields.

In 1929 Sunset Crater was almost blown up by Hollywood for a scene in the movie "Avalanche." Fortunately the local population didn't take to the idea.
