Backyard of the Day:

Orange Empire Railway Museum, Perris, Orange County, California

The Orange Empire Railway Museum is located at 2201 South "A" Street in Perris, Orange County, California

In the fall, when we visited the National City Depot Museum, they recommended that we go to Perris sometime, where they have the largest railroad museum in the western United States, the Orange Empire Railway Museum.
Which is what we did today.

The area where the museum is located is actually a ghost town called Pinacartee or Pinacate. Pinacate was established around 1880 as supply center for the surrounding mining district. Shortly after, when the railroad was built in 1882, Pinacate became one of the stops on the line. When the station in 1886 was moved north to the newly established town of Perris, Pinacate was eventually abandoned and later engulfed by Perris.

To af Pinacates oprindelige bygninger står her endnu.

Two of Pinacate's original buildings still stand here. This little building, called the rock house, was built in 1882, and is probably the oldest surviving building in and around Perris. The house was built as a store by later postmaster Leman Dyer Reynolds, and was probably a stage station on the line to San Jacinto at one time as well.

The other surviving building is a farm house which was built in 1883, and which is said to originally have been a saloon.
