Backyard of the Day:

William Heath Davis House & Pocket Park, Gaslamp Quarter, San Diego, San Diego County, California

The William Heath Davis House & Pocket Park are located at 410 Island Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter of Downtown San Diego, San Diego County, California

We visited the William Heath Davis house in Downtown San Diego today, a house which is the oldest one left in "New Town San Diego."
The house is a prefabricated Saltbox house from 1850, which first stood near, where Seaport Village is now, and belonged to William Heath Davis. Davis was the first to attempt to move San Diego's downtown from Old Town to "New Town," around which the city is built today. However, a fire in San Francisco in 1851 caused Davis' ruin, and he had to abandon the idea.

Next to the William Heath Davis house lies the tiny little Pocket Park, where the main attraction is a statue of the dog "Bum".

Bum was nobody's dog, and he was everybody's dog. He was born in San Francisco, but at six months old he came to San Diego as a stowaway on the ship "Santa Rosa." He roamed the city streets freely, making friends with everyone. The adults loved him as well as the children, even the finest of restaurants fed him, and one of the town's journalists, James Edward "Captain" Friend, regularly wrote little stories about him in the paper.
As a young dog Bum lost his right front paw in a fight with a bulldog, when both dogs in the course of the fight rolled out in front of a train and were run over. The bulldog didn't survive.
Bum died at 12 years old in 1898, and the children of San Diego pooled their pennies, so he could be properly and decently buried.

Day Camping/Boondocking Information

Downtown is a near impossible place to day camp. We parked at a parking meter and stayed just long enough to visit the museum, then we went to Fiesta Island to camp for the rest of the day.
