Dagens baghave:

Backyard of the Day:

Children's Park, San Diego, San Diego County, California

Children's Park is located along the Martin Luther King Promenade at the corner of First and Island in Downtown San Diego, San Diego County, California

We had to do laundry and stuff today, but we managed to squeeze in a visit to Children's Park this morning.

Children's Park was established in 1995 as a "gift to all the children of San Diego", so it is peculiar that it really couldn't be less child friendly.
There is no playground, as the Spud noted loudly and plaintively within twenty seconds of our arrival, and wading is not allowed in the otherwise inviting fountain.
The park is attracting lots of homeless people, and the lack of restrooms is noticable. The area once consisted of sixteen charming grassy knolls, but twelve of those have been flattened to make it easier for police to supervise park activity.
And after all that criticism the only thing left to say is that it's a spectacular little park, especially considering how recently it was built.

The fountain was designed by Peter Walker and is truly a piece of art.

Day Camping/Boondocking Information

Children's Park can be a difficult spot for day camping.
There is limited metered parking along the perimeter of the park, as well as an adjacent parking lot that charges $10.00 for the day. We found it hard to spend more than a few hours here because of the many homeless who have made the park their home and - apparently - their toilet.

This park is, however, well worth a short visit, and once you pay for parking all day anyway, this makes a good jumping off point for walking to Seaport Village, Embarcadero Marina Park, the Gaslamp Quarter, the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum, and Horton Plaza, all just a few blocks away.

Facilities:

Fountain and reflecting pond
Concrete blocks for sitting and playing
Walking path

Dogs allowed on leash.
