Backyard of the Day:

Painted Desert and Petrified Forest National Park, Holbrook, Apache and Navajo Counties, Arizona

Arizona's Painted Desert stretches from Grand Canyon into New Mexico, and the Petrified Forest National Park, part of the Painted Desert, is located east of Holbrook on both sides of the I-40 and partially along Old Route 66 in Apache and Navajo Counties.

Parken ligger i Arizonas farverige "Malede Ørken."

We drove from Holbrook to Petrified Forest National Park, which holds the world's largest collection of petrified wood. The park is located in Arizona's colorful Painted Desert.

The Petrified Forest

About 250.000.000 years ago this area in Arizona was located not far from Panama, and it was covered by a river surrounded by forest. A large number of trees were toppled in a violent storm, and were caught up in the torrent of the river. Eventually all the tree trunks sank to the bottom, and as the millinia went by they were covered with many layers of mud and sand. The area dried up and became a desert, and as the winds eroded away the many layers of soil, the petrified tree trunks appeared, and now cover a large area.

The Painted Desert

The desert here gets its color from the many different soil layers that also covered the petrified trees.
