March 26, 2010 Dansk tekst til venstre English text on the right Dagens baghave: Backyard of the Day: Zzyzx Mineral Springs, Mojave National Preserve, San Bernardino County, California  Zzyzx Mineral Springs are located off Interstate 15 near Baker in Mojave National Preserve, San Bernardino County, California.   Jeg kan ikke tælle, hvor mange gange vi er kørt her forbi, og har sagt til hinanden "gad vide, hvad der ligger dernede." I dag kørte vi fra for at undersøge sagen. I can't say how many times we've come by here and said to each other "wow, wonder what's down there." Today we took the road less traveled in order to find out.     Vejen svinger først forbi Soda Dry Lake, en for længst indtørret playa, der strækker sig hvid og flad til klitterne på den anden side. The road first winds its way past Soda Dry Lake, a long evaporated playa, which stretches white and flat to the dunes beyond.             Længere nede ad vejen ligger Zzyzx Mineral Springs, eller Soda Springs, som det hed engang. I 1940'erne blev det oprettet som helsespa af Curtis Howe Springer, trods det var offentligt land. Han blev arresteret i 1974, og i dag er det hjem til videnskabsmænd, der studerer ørkenen. Further down the road lies Zzyzx Mineral Springs, or Soda Springs, as it was once called. In the 1940's it was established as a health spa by Curtis Howe Springer, although it was public land. He was arrested in 1974, and today this is home to scientists studying the desert environment.

It's no wonder that the mystery of it all has inspired a creepy movie ("Zzyzx") and a couple of songs.       Videnskabsmændene studerer blandt andet de sjældne Mohave Tui Chub fisk. Indtil de blev fundet her, mente man, at de havde været uddøde siden istiden. Among those things studied by the scientists are the rare Mohave Tui Chub fish.
