Canyon de Chelly National Monument, Chinle, Apache County, Arizona

Canyon de Chelly National Monument AKA Tsegi is located east of Chinle in Apache County, Arizona.

From Hubbell Trading Post we headed north to Canyon de Chelly. Here Native Americans have lived for over 5000 years on the flat canyon floors of Canyon del Muerto and Canyon de Chelly. And it was incredibly beautiful.

The first Indians to live here were nomadic hunters, and they left no buildings, but contributed to the large number of Indian pictographs here.

Kan I se det? ~ White House in the Middle Ruin ~ Can you see it?

Anazazi, or basketmakers, settled here approximately 2500 years ago. They built large community houses and introduced farming, and they left many ruins behind around the canyon.

Antelope House Ruins

The ruins are called Antelope House because of the antelope pictographs found on the cliff wall adjacent to the ruins. They are thought to have been created in the early 1800s by Navajo Indian Dibe Yazhi ("Little Sheep").

Omkring 100 Navajo-indianere bor stadig nede i dalbunden.

About 100 Navajo Indians still live on the canyon floor today.

We're still flirting a lot with Old Route 66, and we stopped in Holbrook to get some dinner.

Camping/Boondocking Information

We are boondocked in Holbrook down the street from the restaurant alongside a commercial building, and the train is keeping us company VERY loudly every hour or so.

And if we need a break from RV life, right down the street there's

The Wigwam Motel on Route 66 in Holbrook:

Get your kicks....
