Dagens baghave:

Backyard of the Day:

Stuart Collection and
University of California San Diego,
La Jolla, San Diego County, California

The Stuart Collection is located around the campus of UCSD, located in La Jolla, San Diego County, California.

We parked the "vacation home" on the UCSD campus and took off on a scavenger hunt for the many works of art housed here.

U N D A by Ian Hamilton Finlay

1987 - Stuart Collection

Bogstaverne VNDA (latin: bølge) står på hver stenblok i forskellig rækkefølge.

The letters VNDA (latin: wave) is written on each stone block in various arrangements.

Yuacateca Sentada by Francisco Zuñica

1976

Jeg elskede denne lille statue...

I just loved this little statue...

Something Pacific by Nam June Paik

1986 - Stuart Collection

Some sort of thoughtful commentary on TV's influence on society. But it wasn't attractive, I'll tell you that!

Trees by Terry Allen

1986 - Stuart Collection

April looking for the magical trees in the eucalyptus grove.

We first found the singing tree, which was in the middle of a 50's number...

The Spud lytter til poesi-træet.

The Spud listening to the poetree.

The last tree stands in front of the library and is silent.
...And yes, I loved the trees.

UCSD's library, Geisel Library, is the only steel and concrete building I've ever been completely in love with. That building is a piece of art in its own right. I spent more hours here than I can count, back in those days when I was still going to school.

The library is home to lots of crows' and swallows' nests.

Read/Write/Think/Dream by John Baldessari

2001 - Stuart Collection

Read/Write/Think/Dream is appropriately the entrance to the library.

Theodor Seuss Geisel Memorial by Lark Grey Dimond-Cates

2002

The library was named in honor of Dr. Seuss, who is kicking back outside with the Cat in the Hat. I almost felt compelled to sit down and chat with the man, that's how life-like the statue is.

Snake Path by Alexis Smith

1992 - Stuart Collection

I really loved the snake path, which winds its way past a large stone book with a quote from Milton's "Paradise Lost". Which, by the way, is a great book.

"Da vil du ikke vægre dig
ved at forlade
dette Paradis,
men vil have
et langt lykkeligere
Paradis indeni."

"Then wilt thou not
be loth to leave
this Paradise,
but shalt possess
a Paradis within
thee, happier far."

Vices and Virtues by Bruce Nauman

1988 - Stuart Collection

When it is dark the neon writing on the building alternates between 7 virtues and 7 vices.

Bear by Tim Hawkinson

2005 - Stuart Collection

Can you be anything but crazy about this one?

It's a whole lot bigger than it looks...

Untitled by Michael Asher

1991 - Stuart Collection

Hmmm... ja. Det er en drikkefontæne. Jeg fatter det heller ikke.

Hmmm... yup. It's a drinking fountain. And nope, I don't get it either.

Rumor has it that drinking the water here makes you intelligent...

A stone memorializes the Marine Corps' "Camp Calvin B. Matthews," which was here from 1917 to 1964.

Terrace by Jackie Ferrara

1991 - Stuart Collection

Jeg fatter det ikke... ~ I don't get it...

Two Running Violet V Forms by Robert Irwin

1983 - Stuart Collection

Jeg fatter det stadig ikke... ~ I still don't get it...

Sun God by Niki de Saint Phalle

1983 - Stuart Collection

I love Niki de Saint Phalle, if for no other reason, because she is always so festive.

Green Table by Jenny Holzer

1992 - Stuart Collection

Jeg elskede også det grønne bord. Granit. Jeg elsker bare granit.

I absolutely loved the green table. Granite. I just love granite.

Red Shoe by Elizabeth Murray

1996 - Stuart Collection

It's more charming than beautiful, but you really can't help but let it put you in a cheerful mood!
