Backyard of the Day:

Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs from Great Smoky Mountains National Park northeast through North Carolina, continuing into Virginia.

We spent the past two days on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which runs 469 miles from the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina through the Blue Ridge Mountains in Appalachia to Shenandoah in Virginia.

We've driven through 25 tunnels, to April's great entertainment....

Right now lots of pink azaleas are blooming along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There are regular rhododendron here too, but those are not in bloom yet.

You could easily spend an entire vacation on the Blue Ridge Parkway. But this time around we're just using it to get from the Smoky Mountains to Mount Airy, which means we've gone about halfway up the Parkway in two days. We haven't really been having picture weather, lots of rain and fog, but of course I couldn't entirely help myself....
