White Sands National Monument, Alamagordo, Otero County, New Mexico

White Sands National Monument is located in the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert southwest of
Alamagordo in Otero County, New Mexico.

White Sands is an area in the northern Chihuahua Desert, where the sand is very white, because it consists chiefly of gypsum.

Når "stinkdyr"-sumak begraves i sand, sender den stængler op til overfladen. Begravede stængler holder på sandet, så det ikke blæser væk, og danner efterhånden en pedestal, som planten vokser på.

When skunkbush sumac is buried in sand it sends many stems up to surface. The remaining buried stems keep the sands from blowing away, eventually creating a pedestal for the plant to grow on.
