Saint Thomas Indian Mission was built in 1922 where the old Mission Purísima Concepción was built in 1780. The church is a replica of the old mission church.

The old Mission Purísima Concepción was burned to the ground in an Indian uprising in 1781, less than a year after being established, due to resentment among Quechan Indians over the white man's disrespect of their rights.
This location was temporarily abandoned by the Catholic Church and Mission Purísima Concepción was rebuilt near Lompoc, California in 1787.
