The Blythe Intaglios, Blythe, California

The Blythe Intaglios are located about 15 miles north of Blythe, California
on the west side of the Colorado River.

We'll be spending the bulk of our spare time and energy rattling around the desert the next week or so. For one thing because genealogy's a-calling, and for another thing because it's pickin' freezing around here, and I'm a big cry-baby who likes to see the sun on a daily basis.
Today we saw the Blythe Intaglios which are giant figures sketched in the desert floor by indians thousands of years ago, and have survived because of the remote location.

The route to Blythe parallels an old indian trail, which can still be seen along the paved road.
The trail is from before the arrival of Columbus and goes from the Colorado river to the prehistoric Lake Coachuilla, which was located near the present site of Salton Sea.

This is a figure of an animal. The picture shows the hind legs and tail.

The figures are really best seen from the air,
and were in fact discovered by a pilot overflying the area in 1931.
