Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Durango, La Plata County, Colorado

The Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad travels from Durango to Silverton in the San Juan Mountains and National Forest. It leaves from Durango, La Plata County, Colorado.

Today we traveled north from Durango through the San Juan Mountains to Silverton, round-trip, this time on an old steam train.
The train has served Durango and Silverton for the past 125 years.

It is hard to tell that these are the same mountains we traveled through yesterday. Unlike the highway, the railroad goes along the river in the valley bottom, so we saw considerably less snow.

The snow slowly increased as we approached Silverton.
