The isolation cell, also called the "Dark Cell" has no windows, no toilet in any form, no bed or mattress, and prisoners that were confined to this cell were given only bread and water once a day, in contrast to the otherwise hearty fare provided.
Prisoners were put in isolation for misdeeds such as fighting, sneaking extra food into their cells, playing cards, and talking back to guards, and most were kept in the dark cell seven to fourteen days.

The low door was put here in the 1950's when many westerns were filmed at the old prison. The door was supposed to make the main characters look bigger and badder than they really did.

Yuma Territorial Prison is located at the old ferry landing, Yuma Crossing. Here a bridge was built over the Colorado River in 1920, which is still in use. It is called the "Ocean to Ocean Bridge", as it marked the first time there was a way to drive all the way from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
