Mono Lake er en af Nordamerikas ældste søer, over trekvart million år gammel. Den er to-tre gange mere saltholdig end havet. De hvide søjleformationer i søen er tufa (en slags limsten) og dannes, når kalkrigt vand fra undersøiske kildevæld blandes med søens sodaholdige vand. Mono Lake is among the oldest lakes in North America, more than 3/4 million years old. It is 2-3 times saltier than the ocean. The white towering formations in the lake are tufa (limestone) and are formed when water rich in calcium from springs in the lake bottom is mixed with the soda rich waters of the lake.
