The Penasquitos Adobe Ranch House was built in 1824 by Captain Francisco Maria Ruiz, who received the property from Mexico's government as payment for years of military service.

Francisco Maria Ruiz gave the Penasquitos Adobe Ranch to a grandnephew, Francisco Maria Alvarado, in 1837. Alvarado's son Diego was given the ranch in 1857, and he in turn gave the property to his daughter Maria Estéfana Alvarado, when she married Captain George Alonzo Johnson in 1859. Estéfana and George Johnson also owned a city residence, the Johnson House in Old Town.
They expanded the Penasquitos Adobe Ranch with farm buildings and added more living space in 1862. They lost the ranch in 1880 for economic reasons.

In the 1880s the Penasquitos Adobe Ranch briefly belonged to Colonel Jacob Shell Taylor, after which the ranch stood abandoned for years. It was bought by Charles Frederick Mohnike in 1910, and among other projects he built the adobe barn structure, which remains standing.
In 1921 the ranch was bought by George Sawday and Oliver Sexon, who like Mohnike used it for cattle raising.

One of the three springs at Penasquitos Adobe Ranch is inside this building, and from here flows into a small creek.
