Backyard of the Day:

Jungle Gardens, Avery Island, Iberia Parish, Louisiana

The Jungle Gardens are located on Avery Island in Iberia Parish, Louisiana.

From the Tabasco factory we went to the Jungle Gardens, a park in Avery Island, established by Edward "M'sieu Ned" Avery McIlhenny, second oldest son of Edmund McIlhenny and his wife Mary Eliza Avery. He established the gardens for the primary purpose of creating a sanctuary for the snowy egret, at the time near extinction, which today is again found throughout the U.S.
The gardens also hold just under a thousand kinds of camellias and many azaleas, which we have already promised ourselves to come back and see sometime when they are blooming.

"Fuglebyen", hvor 20.000 snehejrer yngler hvert forår.

"Bird City", where 20,000 snowy egrets nest each spring.

There's lots of duckweed here - April asked why they give the egrets pea soup....

The little temple houses a Buddha Statue originally created by Chon-Ha-Chin for the Shonfa Temple near Peking by order of Emperor Hui-Tsung in the early 1100s.
The statue was stolen by a rogue general, and when it was put up for sale in New York in 1936, the Buddha was bought by two of Ned McIlhenny's friends, who gifted it to him.

I love the moss hanging from all the old trees here.

The alligators here swim on up to you, as soon as they see you, as if they've gotten used to people feeding them. Which is why we were glad they're less than three feet long, not big man-sized ones like the gator we saw in the swamp yesterday.
