I dag for 93 år siden...

93 years ago today...

 

...var min oldefar, Søren Casper, til fods på vej hjem langs med jernbanen, kort efter mørket faldt. Han blev ramt af toget og døde på hospitalet nogle få timer senere.
I fotografiet herunder, taget omkring 1898, er han omgivet af sin familie.

Søren Casper voksede op hos sin moster og onkel, efter hans far begik selvmord i 1846 og hans mor blev gift igen. Han tilbragte senere meget af sin tid sammen med de lokale natmænd og tatere.

Af alle de aner, jeg gerne ville ha' kendt, er han øverst på listen.

...my great grandfather Søren Casper was walking home along the railroad tracks just after dark. He was hit by a passing train and died in the hospital only hours later.
In the photo below, taken around 1898, he is surrounded by his family.

Søren Casper grew up with his maternal aunt and uncle, after his father committed suicide in 1846 and his mother remarried. He later spent much of his time with local gypsies and scoundrels.

Of all the ancestors, I wish I'd known, I think he's first on the list.
