Backyard of the Day:

Cottonwood Creek Park, Encinitas,
San Diego County, California

Cottonwood Creek Park is located at 95 North Vulcan Avenue
in Encinitas, San Diego County, California

We day camped at the Cottonwood Creek Park in Encinitas. The park is only a few years old, and was a great place to spend the day.

Cottonwood Creek risler gennem parken.

Cottonwood Creek trickles through the park. Since ground water here is poor, this stream was the reason the railroad came to Encinitas, and the town itself was established.

Janie Hammond Grice, 1883"

"Each pupil had a garden plot. We were required to plant vegetables so we would know how to grow our own food.

Janie Hammond Grice, 1883"

In a corner of the park is a veteran's memorial.

"The Hammond family had the barrel brigade, but little Mrs. Tallant had the bucket brigade, with one in each hand, she pulled the water up out of the railway well at the bottom of Cottonwood canyon, walking up the steep hill and then carried it three blocks to their home to cook with, feed boarders, and wash the clothes.
