Backyard of the Day:

Lake Wohlford, Escondido, San Diego County, California

Lake Wohlford is located at 25484 Lake Wohlford Road in Escondido, San Diego County, California

Most of today we day camped at Lake Wohlford, which is arguably the most beautiful of San Diego's water reservoirs. It can get pretty overcrowded with fishermen on weekends, but during the week you can often have it to yourself.

Søen er omgivet af store klippestykker.

The lake is surrounded by huge boulders.

Lake Wohlford gik over sine bredder én gang i 1916, efter overordentlig nedbør tilskrevet regnmager Charles Hatfield.

The lake, originally called Bear Valley Reservoir, was formed in 1895 by diverting then and damming up water from the San Luis Rey River. Lake Wohlford flooded once in 1916 after the extreme rainfall that was attributed to Charles Hatfield, the rainmaker.

The top part of the dam was built in 1924, but the remainder is original construction from 1895.
