O'Neill Museum, San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California

O'Neill Museum is located at 31831 Los Rios Street in San Juan Capistrano, Orange County, California

Just around the corner from Zoomars we fell over the O'Neill Museum. It houses the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society, and is one of the town's first frame houses, built in the 1870s.

The house, originally situated on the other side of the railroad, was built by saloon owner Jose Dolores Garcia for his wife Maria Refugio Yorba.
In 1896 Garcia was approached by some prominent citizens, who wanted him to sell the house. He refused, and was shortly after murdered by Metizo Flores. Flores was convicted of the murder, but it was never proven that those who wanted to buy the house were behind the plot, although rumors flew.

The bathroom was added in 1895, shortly before Jose Dolores Garcia was killed.

Garcia familien solgte huset til Albert Pryor i 1903, og Pryor familien boede her indtil 1950erne. Senere blev huset lejet ud, men lejerne flygtede, fordi Albert Pryors spøgelse havde for vane at sidde ude på verandaen.

The Garcia family sold the house to Albert Pryor in 1903, and the Pryor family lived here till the 1950s. Later the house was rented out, but the tenants fled because the ghost of Albert Pryor was in the habit of sitting on the porch.

The kitchen was added in the 1920s, and it was yet another few years before a stove was installed. Until then most of the cooking took place outside.
