We headed north this morning, finally starting our vacation. We rolled into Santa Barbara in the early afternoon, sent a friendly thought to Tue and Lisbeth, and went downtown to visit the old Santa Barbara Mission church.

The old Mission Santa Barbara was the tenth California mission. It was built by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen in 1782, two years after the death of Padre Junipero Serra, who founded the first nine missions, and it served to convert the Chumash Indians. The present-day church is the fourth church on this site. It was built in 1820 to replace the prior church, which was destroyed in an earthquake in 1812. Another earthquake in 1925 damaged the Mission Church again, but this time the building was salvagable, and was restored.

Skt. Frans af Assisi.

"He even said that the brother gardener ought to reserve a place in a corner for a beautiful small garden where he put all kinds of aromatic herbs & flowering plants so that they in their season might invite all men who looked at them to praise GOD... For every creature says & proclaims God has created me for you, o man."

St. Francis of Assisi.

In this cemetery is the grave of a Chumash Indian woman, Juana Maria, who was among those Indians living in the Channel Islands that were rounded up by the Spanish to be transported to Mission Santa Barbara. Juana Maria jumped overboard when she saw that her young brother had been left behind, and the ship abandoned her as an intense storm moved in. Several attempts to find her failed, until 18 years later, when a hunting expedition happened upon her on deserted San Nicolas Island, sitting outside her whale bone house, sewing with a bone needle and seal thread. It took a month to convince her to leave the island to rejoin her people, and when she did, she soon found that there was no longer anybody able to speak her language, so she could answer no questions about her brother or her own survival and life on the island. Seven weeks after she was brought to Mission Santa Barbara she contracted dysentery and died. Among the books that have been written about her one of the best is said to be "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell. It was written in 1960, and was made into a movie in 1964.
