WORDS OF WISDOM
A LITTLE OF WHAT I HAVE KEPT OF THE THINGS I HAVE READ.

I never could let go of a book, until I learned to save the best parts.

"I WOULD BE TRUE, FOR THERE ARE THOSE WHO TRUST ME
I WOULD BE PURE, FOR THERE ARE THOSE WHO CARE
I WOULD BE STRONG, FOR THERE IS MUCH TO SUFFER
I WOULD BE BRAVE, FOR THERE IS MUCH TO DARE
I WOULD BE FRIEND TO ALL, THE FOE, THE FRIENDLESS
I WOULD BE GIVING AND FORGET THE GIFT
I WOULD BE HUMBLE, FOR I KNOW MY WEAKNESS
I WOULD LOOK UP - AND LAUGH - AND LOVE - AND LIFT"

"OF MAKING MANY BOOKS THERE IS NO END, AND MUCH STUDY WEARIES THE BODY"
BOOK OF ECCLESIASTES 12:12

~ ~ ~

"DER ER INGEN ENDE PÅ, SOM DER SKRIVES BØGER, OG MEGEN GRANSKEN TRÆTTER LEGEMET"

"THE RADICAL NOVELTY OF MODERN SCIENCE LIES PRECISELY IN THE REJECTION OF THE BELIEF, WHICH IS AT THE HEART OF ALL POPULAR RELIGION, THAT THE FORCES WHICH MOVE THE STARS AND ATOMS ARE CONTINGENT UPON THE PREFERENCES OF THE HUMAN HEART."

~ ~ ~

RICHARD GEORGE ADAMS IN "WATERSHIP DOWN."

"WHAT THE CATERPILLAR CALLS THE END OF THE WORLD, THE MASTER CALLS A BUTTERFLY."

~ ~ ~

"SOONER OR LATER, THOSE WHO WIN ARE THOSE WHO THINK THEY CAN."

~ ~ ~

"JONATHAN SEAGULL SPENT THE REST OF HIS DAYS ALONE, BUT HE FLEW WAY OUT BEYOND THE FAR CLIFFS. HIS ONE SORROW WAS NOT SOLITUDE, IT WAS THAT OTHER GULLS REFUSED TO BELIEVE THE GLORY OF FLIGHT THAT AWAITED THEM; THEY REFUSED TO OPEN THEIR EYES AND SEE."

~ ~ ~

"HERE IS THE TEST TO FIND WHETHER YOUR MISSION ON EARTH IS FINISHED. IF YOU'RE ALIVE, IT ISN'T."

~ ~ ~

"AS A RULE, WHAT IS OUT OF SIGHT DISTURBS MEN'S MINDS MORE SERIOUSLY THAN WHAT THEY SEE."

~ ~ ~

RICHARD DAVID BACH IN "JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL."

"TODAY I HAVE GROWN TALLER FROM WALKING WITH THE TREES."

~ ~ ~

KARL W. BAKER

"THOSE GOLDEN STREETS... WHAT ABOUT THEM? WHY GOLD? NOT FOR SHOW, MAYBE FOR BEAUTY? EVERYTHING IN HEAVEN IS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN FROM EARTH. VALUES ARE REVERSED. WHAT'S MOST IMPORTANT ON EARTH? WHAT HAVE MEN LIVED AND DIED FOR, FOR MILLENNIA? GOLD. YOU'LL WALK ON IT IN HEAVEN. LIKE CONCRETE OR ASPHALT."

~ ~ ~

JOSEPH T. BAYLY IN "HEAVEN."

"IN ORDER TO BE A REALIST YOU MUST BELIEVE IN MIRACLES."

~ ~ ~

DAVID BEN-GURION

"WITHALL
RECORD THE NAMES OF THOSE
WHO, TAKING THEIR EXAMPLE
DO NOT STAND IDLY BY -
 - WHILE CLOSING DOORS AND WINDOW SHADES -
EXCUSING, WHEN THEIR FELLOW MEN ARE
BEATEN!
STABBED!
TORTURED!
KILLED!
SUCH WERE THE DEEDS OF THE PEOPLE
AMONG WHOM I GREW TO MAN'S ESTATE!
WITH WHOM I LEARNED THE WISDOM:
TO LIGHT A CANDLE!
RATHER - THAN TO CURSE THE DARKNESS!"

~ ~ ~

VICTOR BORGE IN "ONCE UPON A TIME."

"I AM NOW QUITE CURED OF SEEKING PLEASURE IN SOCIETY, BE IT COUNTRY OR TOWN. A SENSIBLE MAN OUGHT TO FIND SUFFICIENT COMPANY IN HIMSELF."

~ ~ ~

"A PERSON WHO HAS NOT DONE ONE HALF HIS DAY'S WORK BY TEN O'CLOCK, RUNS A CHANCE OF LEAVING THE OTHER HALF UNDONE."

~ ~ ~

EMILY JANE BRONTE IN "WUTHERING HEIGHTS."

"KALD EJ DIN GERNING UDEN VÆRD OG RINGE;
FOR HERREN ER EJ STORT OG SMAAT.
HAN SER PÅ SINDELAGET BLOT,
OM OPAD DET VIL BRINGE.
LAD INGEN DAG DA SMULDRE HEN,
DEN KOMMER ALDRIG MER' IGEN.
BYG BORG AF HVERDAGS STENE"

~ ~ ~

"MEN JEG TROR, AT DER ER ET STED,
HVOR ALLE DE SKÆBNER MINDES.
OG JEG TROR AT HVOR ET HJERTE VAR MED,
VIL PLOVDYBE SPOR DER FINDES.
TANKER VIL GRO I TUSINDFOLD,
GIVE DIN GERNING ADELSSKJOLD,
OM DIT NAVN END GLEMTES."

~ ~ ~

RUDOLF HARALD BRUHN IN "FORTÆLLINGER."

"MANY PEOPLE NEGLECT SMALL HAPPINESS, AS THEY WAIT IN VAIN FOR THE BIG ONE."

~ ~ ~

PEARL SYDENSTRICKER BUCK

"PURE LOVE IS UNCONDITIONAL. . . . PURE LOVE IS GIVEN BECAUSE THE PERSON 'IS,' BECAUSE THE PERSON EXISTS. . . . THAT MEANS THAT I CANNOT EARN LOVE. I CAN DO NOTHING TO IMPROVE MY QUALIFICATIONS. . . . THAT, IN TURN, MEANS THAT LOVE CANNOT BE LOST."

~ ~ ~

RICH BUHLER IN "LOVE NO STRINGS ATTACHED."

"THE CROWD WAS FACED WITH A DECISION. EITHER MARY'S BOY WAS THE ONE SENT FROM GOD, OR HE HAD JUST COMMITTED BLASPHEMY. THEY DECIDED THAT THE LATTER WAS THE CASE, AND THEY TOOK JESUS OUT TO THE EDGE OF TOWN TO THROW HIM OVER A CLIFF. WHAT FOLLOWED WAS AWESOMELY DRAMATIC BY VIRTUE OF ITS SIMPLICITY. THE SON OF GOD DID NOT CALL DOWN AN ARMY OF ANGELS OR SUDDENLY DISAPPEAR. INSTEAD, IN A SCENE THAT WOULD MAKE JOHN WAYNE SEEM LIKE A SISSY BY COMPARISON, JESUS TURNED ON THEM AND WALKED AT THE CROWD. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN SOMETHING POWERFUL ABOUT HIS BEARING, BECAUSE THE CROWD THAT HAD BEEN BENT ON KILLING HIM SIMPLY STEPPED ASIDE AND LET HIM GO WITHOUT SO MUCH AS LAYING A HAND ON HIM."

~ ~ ~

ANTHONY "TONY" CAMPOLO IN "THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS A PARTY."

"IF YOU CAN STAY IN THE MIDST OF THE TURMOIL UNPERPLEXED AND CALM BECAUSE YOU SEE JESUS, THAT IS GOD'S PURPOSE IN YOUR LIFE; NOT THAT YOU MAY BE ABLE TO SAY, 'I HAVE DONE THIS AND THAT AND IT'S ALL RIGHT.'"

~ ~ ~

OSWALD CHAMBERS IN "GOD'S WORKMANSHIP."

"THE MOST THOROUGHLY WASTED OF ALL DAYS IS THAT ON WHICH ONE HAS NOT LAUGHED."

~ ~ ~

SÉBASTIEN ROCH NICOLAS CHAMFORT

"A WHOLE PERSON IS ONE WHO WON'T DEMAND THAT OTHERS FILL IN THE MISSING PIECES IN HIS OR HER LIFE, KNOWING THAT ONLY GOD CAN DO THAT."

~ ~ ~

MARIE CHAPIAN IN "CLOSE FRIENDSHIPS - MAKING THEM, KEEPING THEM."

"THE TRAVELER SAID, 'TODAY AT NOON I LEANED MY BACK AGAINST A CLOUD AND ATE MY LUNCH. AND AFTERWARD, COMING DOWN THE SLOPES, I SAW A LAKE OF BLUE FLOWERS AND THEN A LONG, WIDE SCARF OF DEEP MAROON ONES. THIS IS FAIR LAND; THE FAIREST I'VE EVER SEEN.'
I NEVER SAW THE TRAVELER AGAIN... BUT I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN WHAT HE SAID - THAT THIS WAS FAIR LAND, THE FAIREST OF THEM ALL."

~ ~ ~

VERA AND BILL CLEAVER - DESCRIBING THE APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS - IN "WHERE THE LILIES BLOOM."

"I AM THE CHILD.
ALL THE WORLD WAITS FOR MY COMING
FOR WHAT I AM, THE WORLD OF TOMORROW WILL BE.
ALL THE EARTH WATCHES WITH INTEREST TO SEE
WHAT I SHALL BECOME.
CIVILIZATION HANGS IN THE BALANCE.
I AM THE CHILD.
I HAVE COME INTO YOUR WORLD ABOUT WHICH I KNOW NOTHING.
WHY I CAME I KNOW NOT. HOW I CAME I KNOW NOT.
I AM CURIOUS; I AM INTERESTED.
I AM THE CHILD.
YOU HOLD IN YOUR HAND MY DESTINY.
YOU DETERMINE, LARGELY, WHETHER I SHALL SUCCEED OR FAIL.
GIVE ME, I PRAY YOU, THOSE THINGS THAT MAKE FOR HAPPINESS.
TRAIN ME, I BEG YOU,
THAT I MAY BE A BLESSING TO THE WORLD."

~ ~ ~

MAMIE GENE COLE

"IN SPITE OF ALL THE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE TO DATE, I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE HUMAN ANIMAL CANNOT BE THE MOST INTELLIGENT ONE ON EARTH BECAUSE HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ALLOWS HIS OFFSPRING TO COME BACK HOME."

~ ~ ~

WILLIAM HENRY "BILL" COSBY, JR. IN "FATHERHOOD."

"PASSION ISN'T ACCESSIBLE IN SOME SUNSETS, SOME EVENING WALKS, SOME BOUQUETS OF FLOWERS AND NOT IN OTHERS. THE SOURCE OF THE PASSION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OBJECTS OR EVEN THE PEOPLE YOU COME ACROSS. YOU BRING OR DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN PASSION TO EACH EXPERIENCE. IT IS YOUR OWN PASSION FOR LIFE THAT ENABLES YOU TO PERCEIVE THE TRUE BEAUTY IN EACH PERSON, EACH SETTING, EACH SPECTACLE OF NATURE, EACH SITUATION YOU ENCOUNTER."

~ ~ ~

BARBARA DE ANGELIS IN "PASSION."

"YOU HAD FAITH, AND NOW YOU DON'T HAVE IT ANYMORE?"

~ ~ ~

CAROLINA MARIA DE JESUS IN "CHILD OF THE DARK."

"GROWN-UPS NEVER UNDERSTAND ANYTHING FOR THEMSELVES, AND IT IS TIRESOME FOR CHILDREN TO BE ALWAYS AND FOREVER EXPLAINING THINGS TO THEM."

~ ~ ~

"'I CANNOT PLAY WITH YOU,' THE FOX SAID. 'I AM NOT TAMED.'
'AH! PLEASE EXCUSE ME, SAID THE LITTLE PRINCE.
BUT AFTER SOME THOUGHT, HE ADDED:
'WHAT DOES THAT MEAN - "TAME"?' . . . .
'IT IS AN ACT TOO OFTEN NEGLECTED,' SAID THE FOX. 'IT MEANS TO ESTABLISH TIES,'
'"TO ESTABLISH TIES"?'
'JUST THAT,' SAID THE FOX. 'TO ME, YOU ARE STILL NOTHING MORE THAN A LITTLE BOY, WHO IS JUST LIKE A HUNDRED THOUSAND OTHER LITTLE BOYS. AND I HAVE NO NEED OF YOU. AND YOU, ON YOUR PART, HAVE NO NEED OF ME. TO YOU, I AM NOTHING MORE THAN A FOX LIKE A HUNDRED THOUSAND OTHER FOXES. BUT IF YOU TAME ME, THEN WE SHALL NEED EACH OTHER. TO ME, YOU WILL BE UNIQUE IN ALL THE WORLD. TO YOU, I SHALL BE UNIQUE IN ALL THE WORLD . . . . AND THEN LOOK: YOU SEE THE GRAIN-FIELDS DOWN YONDER? I DO NOT EAT BREAD. WHEAT IS OF NO USE TO ME. THE WHEAT FIELDS HAVE NOTHING TO SAY TO ME. AND THAT IS SAD. BUT YOU HAVE HAIR THAT IS THE COLOR OF GOLD. THINK HOW WONDERFUL IT WILL BE WHEN YOU HAVE TAMED ME! THE GRAIN, WHICH IS ALSO GOLDEN, WILL BRING ME BACK THE THOUGHT OF YOU. AND I SHALL LOVE TO LISTEN TO THE WIND IN THE WHEAT.' . . .
SO THE LITTLE PRINCE TAMED THE FOX. AND WHEN THE HOUR OF HIS DEPARTURE DREW NEAR -
'AH,' SAID THE FOX, 'I SHALL CRY.'
'IT IS YOUR OWN FAULT,' SAID THE LITTLE PRINCE. 'I NEVER WISHED YOU ANY SORT OF HARM; BUT YOU WANTED ME TO TAME YOU . . .'
'YES, THAT IS SO,' SAID THE FOX.
'BUT NOW YOU ARE GOING TO CRY!' SAID THE LITTLE PRINCE.
'YES, THAT IS SO,' SAID THE FOX.
'THEN IT HAS DONE YOU NO GOOD AT ALL!'
'IT HAS DONE ME GOOD,' SAID THE FOX, 'BECAUSE OF THE COLOR OF THE WHEAT FIELDS.'"

~ ~ ~

ANTOINE DE SAINT EXUPERY IN "THE LITTLE PRINCE."

 “AND WHO AMONG THE COMPANY AT MONSEIGNEUR'S RECEPTION IN THAT SEVENTEEN HUNDRED AND EIGHTIETH YEAR OF OUR LORD, COULD POSSIBLY DOUBT, THAT A SYSTEM ROOTED IN A FRIZZLED HANGMAN, POWDERED AND GOLD-LACED, PUMPED, AND WHITE-SILK STOCKINGED, WOULD SEE THE VERY STARS OUT!”

~ ~ ~

“IT IS A FAR, FAR BETTER THING THAT I DO, THAN I HAVE EVER DONE; IT IS A FAR, FAR BETTER REST THAT I GO TO THAN I HAVE EVER KNOWN.”

~ ~ ~

CHARLES HUFFAM DICKENS IN "A TALE OF TWO CITIES."

"I ONLY ASK TO BE FREE. THE BUTTERFLIES ARE FREE. MANKIND WILL SURELY NOT DENY TO HAROLD SKIMPOLE WHAT IT CONCEDES TO THE BUTTERFLIES."

~ ~ ~

CHARLES HUFFAM DICKENS IN "BLEAK HOUSE."

"...CHRIST JESUS CAME INTO THIS WORLD TO KILL RELIGION...."

~ ~ ~

JOHANNA-RUTH DOBSCHINER IN "CHOSEN TO LIVE."

"WE RAISED $2,000 SELLING PANCAKES AND $2,000 PRAYING. WHEN WE SOLD THE PANCAKES WE THANKED THE CHOIR MEMBERS FOR STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREET. WE THANKED THE DEACONS FOR GIVING UP THEIR SATURDAY TO COOK PANCAKES; WE THANKED WHATABURGER FOR THE SILLY-LOOKING CHEF HATS; WE THANKED AUNT JEMIMAH FOR SELLING US MIX AT A DISCOUNT, AND LOG CABIN AS WELL - AND THEN WORRIED THAT WE MIGHT HAVE FORGOTTEN TO THANK SOMEONE. WHEN WE RAISED $2,000 BY PRAYER, WE SIMPLY THANKED THE LORD. HE GOT ALL THE GLORY AND ALL THE CREDIT. AFTER ALL, THAT'S WHAT PRAYER IS ALL ABOUT."

~ ~ ~

RONALD DUNN IN "DON'T JUST STAND THERE, PRAY SOMETHING."

"IF WE NEVER HAD TO FACE FEAR, WE WOULD KNOW NOTHING ABOUT COURAGE."

~ ~ ~

"THE MIND OF THE LOWLIEST AND MOST INSIGNIFICANT MAN IS A BATTLEFIELD WHERE THE MIGHTIEST FORCES OF THE UNIVERSE MEET IN WARFARE."

~ ~ ~

JONI TADA EARICKSON IN "A STEP FURTHER."

"IF THE STARS SHOULD APPEAR ONE NIGHT IN A THOUSAND YEARS, HOW WOULD MEN BELIEVE AND ADORE...."

~ ~ ~

RALPH WALDO EMERSON IN "NATURE."

"THE ODD THING WAS THAT, NO MATTER HOW MUCH TIME HE SAVED, HE NEVER HAD ANY TO SPARE; IN SOME MYSTERIOUS WAY, IT SIMPLY VANISHED."

~ ~ ~

MICHAEL ENDE IN "MOMO."

"HOW LOVELY TO THINK THAT NO ONE NEED WAIT A MOMENT, WE CAN START NOW, START SLOWLY CHANGING THE WORLD! HOW LOVELY THAT EVERYONE, GREAT AND SMALL, CAN MAKE THEIR CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS INTRODUCING JUSTICE STRAIGHT AWAY."

~ ~ ~

ANNE FRANK IN "TALES FROM THE HOUSE BEHIND."

"MUM RECKONED THAT GETTING LOST AND FINDING YOUR WAY WERE JUST DIFFERENT SIDES OF THE SAME COIN. YOU COULDN'T HAVE ONE WITHOUT THE OTHER."

~ ~ ~

"THE DIFFERENCE FROM A PERSON AND AN ANGEL IS EASY. MOST OF AN ANGEL IS IN THE INSIDE AND MOST OF A PERSON IS ON THE OUTSIDE." (QUOTING ANNA)

~ ~ ~

"AND GOD SAID LOVE ME, LOVE THEM, AND LOVE IT, AND DON'T FORGET TO LOVE YOURSELF." (QUOTING ANNA)

~ ~ ~

FYNN IN "MISTER GOD, THIS IS ANNA."

"THERE ARE SOME MEN, IT IS TRUE, WHO MAINTAIN THAT THEY ARE NOT RELIGIOUS. AND I DO NOT DOUBT THEIR SINCERITY. BUT I DO DOUBT WHETHER THEY UNDERSTAND THEMSELVES."

~ ~ ~

OLE KRISTIAN HALLESBY IN "WHY I AM A CHRISTIAN."

"GOD IS THE GOD OF THINGS AS THEY ARE . . . NOT AS WE WISH THEY WERE! AND HE WORKS IN THINGS AS THEY ARE."

~ ~ ~

RICHARD C. HALVERSON IN "NO GREATER POWER."

 "FROM TOMORROW ON I SHALL BE SAD
FROM TOMORROW ON - NOT TODAY.
TODAY I WILL BE GLAD, AND EVERY DAY
NO MATTER HOW BITTER IT MAY BE I SHALL SAY
FROM TOMORROW ON I SHALL BE SAD
NOT TODAY."

~ ~ ~

TIM HANSEL IN"WHEN I RELAX I FEEL GUILTY."

"DOG ER JEG IKKE BEGEJSTRET FOR DEN MÅDE, KUNSTFONDENS MIDLER BLIVER GIVET UD TIL KUNSTNERNE PÅ. DE BLIVER MANGE GANGE UDDELT TIL NOGEN, DER HAR EN MASSE PENGE I FORVEJEN. JEG TÆNKER PÅ OEHLENSCHLÄGER. HAN VAR EFTER SIGENDE MEGET DOVEN OG SKREV KUN, NÅR HAN VAR VED AT DØ AF SULT. HAVDE HAN FÅET EN SUM PENGE FRA STATEN DENGANG, TROR JEG NÆPPE, VI HAVDE HAFT HANS HERLIGE DIGTE SOM GULDHORNENE OG ALADDIN AT GLÆDE OS OVER I DAG."

~ ~ ~

EJNER HANSEN IN"EN VASKERMANDS ERINDRINGER."

"IT IS TO THE CREDIT OF HUMAN NATURE, THAT, EXCEPT WHERE ITS SELFISHNESS IS BROUGHT INTO PLAY, IT LOVES MORE READILY THAN IT HATES. HATRED, BY A GRADUAL AND QUIET PROCESS, WILL EVEN BE TRANSFORMED TO LOVE, UNLESS THE CHANGE BE IMPEDED BY A CONTINUALLY NEW IRRITATION OF THE ORIGINAL FEELING OF HOSTILITY."

~ ~ ~

NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE IN "THE SCARLET LETTER."

"LORI LOOKED UP AT ME. 'IS HE RIGHT, TOREY? AM I A RETARD KID?' . . .
GENTLY I PUSHED BACK HER HAIR FROM HER FACE . . . . SHE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL.
'THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU, LORI.'
HER EYES WERE ON MY FACE.
'THAT'S THE TRUTH, AND YOU BELIEVE IT. DON'T EVER LET ANYONE TELL YOU OTHERWISE. NO MATTER WHAT. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH YOU.'
'BUT I CAN'T READ.'
'HITLER COULD READ.'
'WHO'S HITLER?'
'A MAN WHO REALLY WAS RETARDED.'"

~ ~ ~

"ALL THE TIME I'VE KNOWN YOU, LOR, YOU'VE CARED. AND THAT'S MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN READING IS. NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS, DON'T EVER FORGET THAT. IN THIS WORLD WE SO BADLY NEED PEOPLE WHO CARE. THERE'S MORE THAN ENOUGH READERS TO GET ALL THE READING DONE. BUT WE'RE TERRIBLY SHORT ON CARERS."

~ ~ ~

"PEOPLE ARE LIKE HYACINTH BULBS. ALL WE CAN DO IS MAKE A GOOD PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO GROW, BUT EACH PERSON IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DOING HIS OWN GROWING IN HIS OWN TIME. IF WE GET IN THERE AND MESS, ALL WE DO IS HURT. NO MATTER HOW WELL MEANING WE ARE. AND SOMETIMES GROWING IS A VERY SILENT THING, LIKE THE BULBS IN THE REFRIGERATOR. SOMETIMES WE CAN'T EVEN TELL IT'S HAPPENING, BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN IT ISN'T."

~ ~ ~

TOREY LYNN HAYDEN IN "SOMEBODY ELSE'S KIDS."

"DU SKAL PLANTE ET TRÆ
DU SKAL GØRE ÉN GERNING,
SOM LEVER NÅR DU GÅR I KNÆ.
ÉN TING SOM SKAL VARE OG VÆRE TIL LYKKE OG LÆ.
DU SKAL ÅBNE DIT JEG
DU SKAL BLIVE ÉT ENESTE TRIN PÅ EN VIDERE VEJ.
DU SKAL VÆRE ET LED I EN LOD,
SOM NÅR UD OVER DIG."

~ ~ ~

PIET HEIN

"MEN DA JEG GIK FRA VEJENS TØRRE STØV
IND I DET GRØNNE GRÆS, HVIS BLØDE BLADE
FLØD HVISKENDE OM MINE NØGNE FØDDER
KØLIGT OG VÅDT,
DA STEG EN GLÆDE I MIG SOM ET SPRINGVAND
MED TUSIND DRÅBER GNISTRENDE I SOLEN,
OG JEG FALDT NED PÅ KNÆ SOM RAMT AF LYNET
OG VIDSTE, UNDRENDE, AT ALT VAR GODT."

~ ~ ~

GRETHE HELTBERG

"WHAT ARE YOU BUT THE GREATEST FRIEND
WHO WOULD SAY NOTHING BUT GOOD TO ME
TO LIFT ME PAST THE DARK LEVELS I HAVE KNOWN
AND HAVE GIVEN ME A NEW VISION
OF BOTH MY INNER SELF AND THE WORLD ABOUT ME.
WHAT CAN I SAY OF YOU EXCEPT
THAT I KNOW NO GREATER JOY THAN THINKING OF YOU WITH LOVE
THOUGH I MAY NOT SEE YOU EVER AGAIN
YOU HAVE GIVEN ME SO MUCH MORE
THAN MOST WHOM I HAVE ALWAYS KNOWN
SO NOW THAT LIFE IS NEW AND DEAR
SHALL I NOT DO AS MUCH
AND PASS ALONG TO OTHERS THE RIGHT TO LIVE AND LEARN
AND KNOW THAT THERE ARE SUCH AS YOU?"

~ ~ ~

"HOW OFTEN IN THE EARLY MORN WHEN ALL THE WORLD IS NEW
I STAND AND GAZE AT THE RISING SUN
AND MY THOUGHTS WILL TURN TO YOU.
ARE YOU HAPPY? IS LIFE WORTHWHILE? ARE YOUR HOURS TOO FEW?
DO YOU MIND WHEN THE DAY IS DONE
THAT YOUR DREAMS HAVE NOT COME TRUE?
DO YOU WEARY OF ALL THE THINGS THAT LIFE DEMANDS EACH DAY?
CAN YOU FIND A QUIET PLACE APART IN WHICH TO PRAY?
AND DO YOU LEAVE TIME BETWEEN MORN AND NIGHT,
SOME TIME JUST TO BE FREE?
BUT MORE THAN THAT I WANT TO ASK
DO YOU EVER THINK OF ME?"

~~~
JOYCE SEQUICHIE HIFLER IN "THINK ON THESE THINGS."
"THERE IS A PROSPECT GREATER THAN THE SEA, AND IT IS THE SKY; THERE IS A PROSPECT GREATER THAN THE SKY, AND IT IS THE HUMAN SOUL."
~ ~ ~
"IF WE TOOK A LITTLE TIME, THE NETTLE WOULD BE USEFUL; WE NEGLECT IT, AND IT BECOMES HARMFUL. THEN WE KILL IT. MEN ARE SO LIKE THE NETTLE! THERE ARE NO BAD HERBS, AND NO BAD MEN; THERE ARE ONLY BAD CULTIVATORS."
~ ~ ~
"CHILDREN INSTANTLY ACCEPT JOY AND HAPPINESS WITH QUICK FAMILIARITY, BEING HAPPY AND JOYFUL BY NATURE."
"THIS MUST BE THE EXHILARATION THAT DRIVES EXPLORERS. THE SURPRISE OF ALWAYS FINDING ANOTHER VISTA, A NEW THOUGHT, AN UNEXPECTED STRENGTH. THE COMRADESHIP OF DOING SOMETHING TOGETHER. DOING SOMETHING NO ONE ELSE WOULD DARE. AND IN THE END FINDING SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AND EVER-PRESENT AS THE SKY."
~ ~ ~
RON JONES IN "THE ACORN PEOPLE."
"SHEEP ARE NOTORIOUS CREATURES OF HABIT. LEFT TO THEMSELVES THEY WILL FOLLOW THE SAME TRAILS TILL THEY BECOME DEEP RUTS; GRAZE THE SAME HILLS UNTIL THEY TURN TO DESERT WASTES; AND POLLUTE THEIR OWN GROUND UNTIL IT IS RIFE WITH DISEASE AND PARASITES. . . . DAVID KNEW THAT IF THE FLOCK WAS TO FLOURISH THE SHEEP HAD CONSTANTLY TO BE UNDER HIS METICULOUS CONTROL AND GUIDANCE."
~ ~ ~
PHILLIP KELLER IN "A SHEPHERD LOOKS AT PSALM 23."
“I SEE NOW THAT THE PATH I CHOOSE . . . MAKES ME WHAT I AM. I AM NOT ONLY A THING, BUT ALSO A WAY OF BEING - ONE OF MANY WAYS - AND KNOWING THE PATHS I HAVE FOLLOWED AND THE ONES LEFT TO TAKE WILL HELP ME UNDERSTANDING WHAT I AM BECOMING.”
~ ~ ~
"ANY ONE WHO HAS COMMON SENSE WILL REMEMBER THAT THE BEWILDERMENTS OF THE EYE ARE OF TWO KINDS, AND ARISE FROM TWO CAUSES, EITHER FROM COMING OUT OF THE LIGHT OR FROM GOING INTO THE LIGHT, WHICH IS TRUE OF THE MIND'S EYE, QUITE AS MUCH AS OF THE BODILY EYE; AND HE WHO REMEMBERS THIS WHEN HE SEES ANY ONE WHOSE VISION IS PERPLEXED AND WEAK, WILL NOT BE TOO READY TO LAUGH; HE WILL FIRST ASK WHETHER THAT SOUL OF MAN HAS COME OUT OF THE BRIGHTER LIFE, AND IS UNABLED TO SEE BECAUSE UNACCUSTOMED TO THE DARK, OR HAVING TURNED FROM DARKNESS TO THE DAY IS DAZZLED BY EXCESS OF LIGHT. AND HE WILL COUNT THE ONE HAPPY IN HIS CONDITION AND STATE OF BEING, AND HE WILL PITY THE OTHER. . . ." (QUOTING PLATO)
~ ~ ~
"I WAS LIFTED OUT OF THE DARK CELL OF MY OWN MIND, TO BECOME PART OF SOMEONE ELSE - JUST AS I HAD EXPERIENCED IT THAT DAY ON THE COUCH IN THEREPY. IT WAS THE FIRST STEP OUTWARD INTO THE UNIVERSE - BEYOND THE UNIVERSE - BECAUSE IN IT AND WITH IT WE MERGED TO RECREATE AND PERPETUATE THE HUMAN SPIRIT. EXPANDING AND MERGING OUTWARD, AND CONTRACTING AND FORMING INWARD, IT WAS THE RHYTHM OF BEING, OF BREATHING, OF HEARTBEAT, OF DAY AND NIGHT - AND THE RHYTHM OF OUR BODIES SET OFF AN ECHO IN MY MIND."
"BECAUSE YOU PROVED HUMAN, BECAUSE YOU FELL, DOES THAT MAKE YOU A FAILURE? OR DOES IT MEAN I HAVE BEEN BETRAYED? OR DOES IT SIMPLY MEAN THAT I HEAPED UPON YOUR SLENDER SHOULDERS THE BURDEN OF IDEALISM - THAT I PLACED YOU ON THE PEDESTAL OF MY HIGH STANDARDS AND CHAINED YOUR FEET WITH HEAVY LINKS OF EXPECTATION? DID I ASK YOU TO BE GOD AND THEN WEEP WHEN YOU WERE NOT?"
AND THIS THOUGHT UNWRAPPED A SADNESS THAT WAS NOT HIS OWN. IT WAS CENTURIES, MILLENNIA OLD. IT SWEPT THROUGH HIM AND COUNTLESS OTHERS LIKE THE WIND THROUGH A FIELD OF GRASS. "ON A WARM FRIDAY NIGHT IN APRIL 1961, JOHN F. KENNEDY GATHERED A HANDFUL OF HIS CLOSEST ADVISORS IN THE CABINET ROOM TO PONDER THE SOVIET SPACE CHALLENGE . . . . A MAN OF LITTLE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE, HE WAS LISTENING TO [THEM] DESCRIBE A 10-YEAR, 40-BILLION-DOLLAR RACE WITH NO GUARANTEE THAT AMERICA WOULD GET TO THE MOON FIRST. LIKE A BOY, KENNEDY PUT HIS FOOT ON THE EDGE OF THE CABINET TABLE, FIDDLED WITH THE LOOSE RUBBER SOLE ON HIS SHOE, RAN HIS HANDS THROUGH HIS HAIR, AND ENDED THE MEETING WITH HIS JAW SET. FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER HE SENT THE WORD OUT, 'WE'RE GOING TO THE MOON.'"
"THE PIGLET LIVED IN A VERY GRAND HOUSE IN THE MIDDLE OF A BEECH-TREE, AND THE BEECH-TREE WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FOREST, AND THE PIGLET LIVED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HOUSE. NEXT TO HIS HOUSE WAS A PIECE OF BROKEN BOARD WHICH HAD: "TRESPASSERS W" ON IT. WHEN CHRISTOPHER ROBIN ASKED THE PIGLET WHAT IT MEANT, HE SAID IT WAS HIS GRANDFATHER'S NAME, AND HAD BEEN IN THE FAMILY FOR A LONG TIME. CHRISTOPHER ROBIN SAID YOU COULDN'T BE CALLED TRESPASSERS W, AND PIGLET SAID YES, YOU COULD, BECAUSE HIS GRANDFATHER WAS, AND IT WAS SHORT FOR TRESPASSERS WILL, WHICH WAS SHORT OF TREPASSERS WILLIAM. AND HIS GRANDFATHER HAD HAD TWO NAMES IN CASE HE LOST ONE - TRESPASSERS AFTER AN UNCLE, AND WILLIAM AFTER TRESPASSERS. 'I'VE GOT TWO NAMES,' SAID CHRISTOPHER ROBIN CARELESSLY. 'WELL, THERE YOU ARE, THAT PROVES IT,' SAID PIGLET."
"MOST DO NOT FULLY SEE THIS TRUTH THAT LIFE IS DIFFICULT. INSTEAD THEY MOAN MORE OR LESS INCESSANTLY, NOISILY OR SUBTLY, ABOUT THE ENORMITY OF THEIR PROBLEMS, THEIR BURDENS, AND THEIR DIFFICULTIES AS IF LIFE WERE GENERALLY EASY, AS IF LIFE SHOULD BE EASY. THEY VOICE THEIR BELIEFS, NOISILY OR SUBTLY, THAT THEIR DIFFICULTIES REPRESENT A UNIQUE KIND OF AFFLICTION THAT SHOULD NOT BE AND THAT HAS SOMEHOW BEEN ESPECIALLY VISITED UPON THEM, OR ELSE UPON THEIR FAMILIES, THEIR TRIBE, THEIR CLASS, THEIR NATION, THEIR RACE, OR EVEN THEIR SPECIES, AND NOT UPON OTHERS."
"YET AT LEAST SOME FRIENDSHIPS, WHETHER BEST FRIEND OR NOT, ARE 'FOR LIFE' - A COMMITMENT THAT GROWS AND DEVELOPS OUT OF THE RELATIONSHIP ITSELF, OUT OF A FRIENDSHIP THAT WITHSTANDS THE TEST OF TIME, OF SEPARATION, OF TOGETHERNESS, OF UNEVEN LEVELS OF DEVELOPMENT, OF UNCERTAIN STEPS TOWARD CHANGE, OF GROWTH THAT CRAWLS ONE MOMENT AND GALLOPS THE NEXT."
"AFTER A WHILE YOU LEARN THE SUBTLE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN HOLDING A HAND AND CHAINING A SOUL.
AND YOU LEARN THAT LOVE DOES NOT MEAN LEANING
AND COMPANY DOES NOT MEAN SECURITY
AND YOU BEGIN TO ACCEPT YOUR DEFEATS
WITH YOUR HEAD UP AND YOUR EYES OPEN
WITH THE GRACE OF A WOMAN, NOT THE GRIEF OF A CHILD.
AND LEARN TO BUILD ALL YOUR ROADS ON TODAY
BECAUSE TOMORROW'S GROUND IS TOO UNCERTAIN
FOR PLANS AND FUTURES HAVE A WAY
OF FALLING DOWN IN MID-FLIGHT.
AFTER A WHILE YOU LEARN
THAT EVEN SUNSHINE BURNS IF YOU GET TOO MUCH.
SO PLANT YOUR OWN GARDEN AND DECORATE YOUR OWN SOUL
INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO BRING YOU FLOWERS.
AND YOU LEARN THAT YOU REALLY CAN ENDURE
THAT YOU REALLY ARE STRONG
AND YOU REALLY DO HAVE WORTH.
AND YOU LEARN AND LEARN... WITH EVERY GOODBYE YOU LEARN."
"I MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH SOMEONE, WITH YOU, PERHAPS, FOR SOMETIME IN ANY OF YOUR TOMORROWS, AND ALL THE FUTURE TOMORROWS THAT FOLLOW YOUR YESTERDAYS. I REACH OUT INTO A FUTURE THAT NEITHER OF US CAN SEE, AND I PLAN A MEETING WITH YOU, AND ASK YOU TO TRUST ME TO BE THERE WITH YOU. I STRETCH MYSELF INTO UNPREDICTABLE DAYS AHEAD AND MAKE ONE THING PREDICTABLE FOR YOU: I WILL BE THERE WITH YOU. I CREATE A SMALL ISLAND OF CERTAINTY FOR YOU IN THE SWIRLING WATERS OF OUR UNCERTAINTIES: IT IS THE CERTAINTY OF MY PRESENCE WITH YOU. I MAKE SPACE IN MY LIFE FOR YOU THAT YOU KNOW WILL BE THERE WAITING FOR YOU, EVEN IF EVERY OTHER PLACE IS CROWDED. THESE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS I DO WHEN I MAKE A COMMITMENT TO ANOTHER HUMAN BEING."
"WHAT I AM GOING TO PROPOSE NOW IS SOMETHING WHICH OUGHT NOT TO APPEAR UNUSUAL OR AT ALL IMPOSSIBLE OF EXECUTION. YET I AM AWARE THAT IT WILL BE SO REGARDED BY A LARGE NUMBER OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH. BUT IN ORDER THAT WE MAY HAVE A THOROUGH UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WE ARE CONSIDERING, I WILL PUT MY PROPOSITION VERY PLAINLY, PERHAPS BLUNTLY. I WANT VOLUNTEERS FROM FIRST CHURCH WHO WILL PLEDGE THEMSELVES EARNESTLY AND HONESTLY FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR NOT TO ATTEMPT ANYTHING WITHOUT FIRST ASKING THE QUESTION, 'WHAT WOULD JESUS DO?'"
CHARLES MONROE SHELDON IN "IN HIS STEPS."
"THE CHILD PROVIDES NOTHING FOR HIMSELF, AND YET EVERYTHING IS PROVIDED. HE TAKES NO THOUGHT FOR THE MORROW, AND FORMS NO PLANS. YET ALL HIS LIFE IS PLANNED OUT FOR HIM, AND HE FINDS HIS PATHS MADE READY, OPENING OUT AS HE COMES TO THEM DAY BY DAY AND HOUR BY HOUR. HE GOES IN AND OUT OF HIS FATHER'S HOUSE WITH EASE AND ABANDONMENT, ENJOYING ALL THE GOOD THINGS THEREIN, WITHOUT HAVING SPENT A PENNY IN PROCURING THEM. PESTILENCE MAY WALK THROUGH THE STREETS OF HIS CITY, BUT THE CHILD REGARDS IT NOT. FAMINE AND FIRE AND WAR MAY RAGE AROUND HIM, BUT UNDER HIS FATHER'S TENDER CARE THE CHILD ABIDES IN UTTER UNCONCERN AND PERFECT REST. HE LIVES IN THE PRESENT MOMENT AND RECEIVES HIS LIFE UNQUESTIONINGLY AS HE COMES TO IT DAY BY DAY FROM HIS FATHER'S HANDS."
"A SIMPLE CHILD
THAT LIGHTLY DRAWS ITS BREATH,
AND FEELS ITS LIFE IN EVERY LIMB,
WHAT SHOULD IT KNOW OF DEATH?
I MET A LITTLE COTTAGE GIRL:
SHE WAS EIGHT YEARS OLD, SHE SAID;
HER HAIR WAS THICK WITH MANY A CURL
THAT CLUSTERED ROUND HER HEAD.
SHE HAD A RUSTIC, WOODLAND AIR,
AND SHE WAS WILDLY CLAD:
HER EYES WERE FAIR, AND VERY FAIR;
- HER BEAUTY MADE ME GLAD.
'SISTERS AND BROTHERS, LITTLE MAID,
HOW MANY MAY YOU BE?'
'HOW MANY? SEVEN IN ALL,' SHE SAID,
AND WONDERING LOOKED AT ME.
'AND WHERE ARE THEY? I PRAY YOU TELL.'
SHE ANSWERED 'SEVEN ARE WE;
AND TWO OF US AT CONWAY DWELL,
AND TWO ARE GONE TO SEA.
TWO OF US IN THE COURTYARD LIE,
MY SISTER AND MY BROTHER;
AND IN THE CHURCHYARD COTTAGE, I
DWELL NEAR THEM WITH MY MOTHER.'
'YOU SAY THAT TWO AT CONWAY DWELL,
AND TWO ARE GONE TO SEA,
YET YE ARE SEVEN! I PRAY YOU TELL,
SWEET MAID, HOW THIS MAY BE.'
THEN DID THE LITTLE MAID REPLY,
'SEVEN BOYS AND GIRLS ARE WE;
TWO OF US IN THE CHURCHYARD LIE
BENEATH THE CHURCHYARD TREE.'
'YOU RUN ABOUT, MY LITTLE MAID,
YOUR LIMBS THEY ARE ALIVE;
IF TWO ARE IN THE CHURCHYARD LAID,
THEN YE ARE ONLY FIVE.'
'THEIR GRAVES ARE GREEN, THEY MAY BE SEEN,'
THE LITTLE MAID REPLIED,
'TWELVE STEPS OR MORE FROM MY MOTHER'S DOOR,
AND THEY ARE SIDE BY SIDE.
MY STOCKINGS THERE I OFTEN KNIT,
MY KERCHIEF THERE I HEM;
AND THERE UPON THE GROUND I SIT
AND SING A SONG TO THEM.
AND OFTEN AFTER SUNSET, SIR,
WHEN IT IS LIGHT AND FAIR,
I TAKE MY LITTLE PORRINGER
AND EAT MY SUPPER THERE.
THE FIRST THAT DIED WAS SISTER JANE,
IN BED SHE MOANING LAY,
TILL GOD RELEASED HER OF HER PAIN,
AND THEN SHE WENT AWAY.
SO IN THE CHURCHYARD SHE WAS LAID;
AND, WHEN THE GRASS WAS DRY,
TOGETHER ROUND HER GRAVE WE PLAYED,
MY BROTHER JOHN AND I.
AND WHEN THE GROUND WAS WHITE WITH SNOW
AND I COULD RUN AND SLIDE,
MY BROTHER JOHN WAS FORCED TO GO,
AND HE LIES BY HER SIDE.'
'HOW MANY ARE YOU THEN?' SAID I,
'IF THEY TWO ARE IN HEAVEN?'
QUICK WAS THE LITTLE MAID'S REPLY,
'OH, MASTER! WE ARE SEVEN.'
'BUT THEY ARE DEAD, THOSE TWO ARE DEAD!
THEIR SPIRITS ARE IN HEAVEN!'
'TWAS THROWING WORDS AWAY, FOR STILL
THE LITTLE MAID WOULD HAVE HER WILL,
AND SAID, 'NAY, WE ARE SEVEN!'"
