RESCUED FROM DROWNING Samuel Hughes Saves Life of William Pullum, Who Fell Into River. Samuel Hughes, 941 Elmira street, Wednesday morning rescued William Pullum, 37 years old, a private watchman, 722 St. Louis street, from being drowned in the river. Pullum was detailed to watch a barge at the head of Piety street and while walking along the river's edge he was taken with a heart attack and fell into the water. Hughes, who was rowing in a skiff some distance away, heard the splash when the watchman struck the water, and hurrying to his assistance pulled him into the boat as he was about to sink for the last time. Pullum was taken to Charity Hospital, where it was found that he was suffering with a fractured skull. His condition is said to be serious. |
