POISONED WITH ARSENIC

How Joseph Meunier Ended His Unhappy Life.

At 8 o'clock yesterday morning Joseph Meunier, a native of this city and a clerk by occupation, died from the effects of a dose of arsenious poison at his residence No. 472 Felicity street. Meunier acknowledged having swallowed a quantity of "Rough on Rats" the evening previous with suicidal intent, and said that his failure to obtain employment and pecuniary embarrassment caused him to commit the rash act.
Assistant Coroner Stanhope Jones viewed the body yesterday morning and gave a verdict of death by suicide.
Some two weeks ago Meunier, who had been for some time previous greatly depressed, attempted to commit suicide by swallowing a quantity of laudanum while on a visit at the residence of his sister, but the act was discovered in time to save his life. Last Thursday evening he took a dose of medicine, he said, but in reality swallowed the poison known as "Rough on Rats." At about 11 o'clock he became seriously ill with cramps in his stomach and extreme thirst. Drs. Watkins and Craner were summoned and did everything in their power to alleviate the sufferings of the man and to save his life. All, however, proved in vain, and Meunier died at 8 o'clock yesterday morning. He leaves a childless widow to mourn his loss.
