Cabrillo National Monument & Lighthouse
San Diego, California
~ November 2004 ~

The Cabrillo National Monument is located in Point Loma
at 1800 Cabrillo Memorial Drive,
San Diego CA 92106
(619) 557-5450

The Cabrillo National Monument is home to the old Point Loma Lighthouse, built in 1854. It was among the first eight American lighthouses built on the West Coast. However, the lighthouse's placement 422 feet above sea level caused the light to be frequently shrouded in fog and low clouds, and so in 1891 the lighthouse was abandoned, when a new lighthouse was built down closer to the water.

Looking southwest from Point Loma Lighthouse
you can see the uninhabited Los Coronados Islands of Mexico.
In the winter this part of Cabrillo National Monument
is a good spot for whale watching,
and the area close to the water is full of tidepools.

Sydvest for Point Loma Fyrtårn

Cabrillo National Monument commemorates Portuguese explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who September 28, 1542, became the first European to land at San Diego Bay, which he originally named San Miguel.
