Julian Gold Rush Hotel, built in 1897, is Southern California's oldest operating hotel. It was established by Albert Robinson, a freed slave from Missouri, who still is said to be a friendly haunt around the premises.

The "Peg-Leg Smith Liars' Contest"

Thomas L. "Peg Leg" Smith (1801-1866), was a mountain man, prospector, horse thief, and spinner of tall tales. Legends regarding his lost gold mine have grown through the years, and countless people have searched the desert for its fabulous wealth. How "Peg Leg" got his nickname is an interesting story. During a fight with the Indians in 1827, he took a bullet to his ankle, shattering the bone. His companions, who thought it would be fatal, carried him away from the battle. In an effort to save his own life, "Peg Leg" Smith took a knife and began sawing away at his lower leg. Between spells of nausea and fainting, and while swearing at his friends, he eventually managed to chop off his own leg. Smith survived and later carved himself a wooden leg and learned to walk with it, and thus came about the name of "Peg Leg" Smith. Or so he said.

"LET THOSE WHO SEEK PEGLEG'S GOLD ADD TEN ROCKS TO THIS PILE".
Judging from the pile, a great many people are out looking for "Peg Leg's" gold.

Is it possible that the gold could be at the end of the rainbow?

A man that looked quite like I imagine "Peg Leg" Smith looked - except for having two legs - made our bonfire. Notice the trophies on the table behind him.

And then darkness fell, and the liars got going, each story more incredible than the one before. The best was a lady who managed to implicated everybody elses lies into her own story, it was hysterical. No doubt "Peg Leg" would have been proud!

Remember those trophies? The winners each got one. And the trophies were not engraved with "GREATEST LIAR" or "BEST TALL TALE", oh no. They were fittingly engraved with things like "NATIONAL BOXING CHAMPION 1983" and "MISS CALIFORNIA RUNNER-UP 1977".
Oh, and one more thing. The contest ended when it began to rain cats and dogs for the first and only time in thirty years - it was in the desert, remember? AND WE'RE NOT EVEN LYING!

The San Andreas Fault Line

On the way home we traveled along the San Andreas Fault, the world's most active earthquake fault.

Salton Sea

Salton Sea is a large inland lake, which was created between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado River accidentally flooded and filled the area. The lake has no run-off, so it is quite saline, and continues to become increasingly so as water evaporates, leaving the salt behind. Large amounts of hydrogen sulphide causes the lake to smell rotten, and as the increasing salinity threatens the lake's fishlife, the rich birdlife is endangered as well.

Imperial Valley

Continuing through Imperial Valley on our way back to San Diego it is as always striking to see the contrast between the cultivated desert and the natural desert areas. It is an incredible thought that 2/3 of the worlds crops are grown in the Imperial Valley in irrigated desert.

With irrigation.
